Men Fall to ATU, 76-72

WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University carried a lead deep into the final stages only to watch Arkansas Tech rally for a 76-72 men’s basketball victory Thursday night in Weatherford.

The loss was SWOSU’s third straight and dropped the Bulldogs to 8-4 overall and 0-3 in the Great American Conference. SWOSU will continue its home stand Saturday with a game against Harding University at 4 p.m.

ATU, which improved to 9-3 and 1-1 in league play, was led by Johnie Davis who had a game-high 35 points. Davis was an astonishing 22-of-23 from the free throw line. The Wonder Boys as a team frequented the line 45 times, making 37 for 82%.

SWOSU was led by Thomas Davis who finished with 26 points. He was joined in double figure scoring by Zack Howe with 12 and Filip Toric with 10.

The Bulldogs had leads as great as seven points throughout the second half. The last came on Kenyan Borders layup giving SWOSU a 46-39 lead with 15:29 to play.

Tech fought back eventually tying the game and then taking the lead for good when Davis hit his 17th and 18th free throws to put the Wonder Boys ahead 60-59 with 4:41 to play. He ended up making five more in the final four minutes to keep ATU in front by a nose.

SWOSU finished the game making 22-of-48 shots for 46%. ATU was just 19-of-56 for 34% but ended up making 13 more free throws than the Bulldogs.

SWOSU turned the ball over 26 times while ATU had just 17.
