Chase Elliott scored the game winner with six seconds to play
DALLAS, Texas – Chase Elliott’s basket with six seconds to play allowed Southwestern Oklahoma State University to emerge with a 79-78 victory over Dallas Baptist in the final day of the DBU Thanksgiving Men’s Basketball Classic Saturday.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 5-1 and returns them home where they will enjoy an extended break before meeting rival Central Oklahoma Tuesday, Dec. 6 in Weatherford.
Elliott who scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half led a late-game rally as the Bulldogs beat the Patriots for the second time in a span of five days. Elliott made a pair of free throws to give SWOSU a 75-74 lead with 1:11 to play. It was SWOSU’s first lead since the early moments of the second half.
DBU went back ahead moments later on a basket by Ryan Marsh with 47 seconds to play only to see Elliott respond by putting the Bulldogs back in front. His short jumper put SWOSU ahead 77-76 with 30 seconds to play.
The Patriots then got two free throws by Nick Fox to move back in front only to see Elliott counter again with the game-winner at six seconds. The game was evenly contested throughout with the lead changing hands 19 times and being tied 13 others.
Three other SWOSU players also scored in double figures. They were Dominick Cornelius who finished with 15 points and Marin Zelalija and Flip Toric who added 10 points apiece.
SWOSU ended the game making 28-of-58 attempts for 48 percent while making nearly half of their three-point attempts (12-of-25, 48%). The Patriots shot better making 52% of their shots on 22-of-42 attempts. However, the Bulldogs forced DBU into 19 turnovers while committing just 11.
